La Guitarra en México
Oct. 25-29
Mexico comes to Victoria with a five-day residency by four leading instructors/performers from the state of Veracruz. Topics include the Veracruz Son, Manuel Ponce, and Mexican guitar music. The masterclasses will focus on Latin music and its influences. All events are open to the public and are admission by donation. The schedule is as follows:

African, Spanish and indigenous elements combine to create the son, a type of music, song and cultural lifestyle from the port city of Veracruz. During Spanish colonial times, the Catholic Church tried unsuccessfully to ban the son, but its irrepressible energy and tendency to deride death and the church, persisted.
