With Peña’s newest presentation, A Compás !, the primal pulse of flamenco is celebrated – his company passionately expressing the compelling nature of a range of flamenco rhythms, from the almost ‘tribal’, trance-inducing quality of the alboreá to the razor-sharp complexity of the bulería. At various points in the show, each virtuoso artist is isolated ‘in the moment’, thrown (as it were) into the raw reality of a given rhythmic structure or compás. By fusing each performer’s individual expression of each rhythm, the ensemble creates an experience that is at once both intimate and invitingly communal.
As a renowned guitarist, composer, dramatist and artistic mentor, Paco Peña embodies both the authenticity and innovation in flamenco. His career has been a transforming force in the world’s perception of this archetypal Spanish art form. The soul of flamenco lies in the authentic expression of emotions through music and dance, and A Compas! reflects the rich culture and emotional depths from which flamenco emerged: “the heartfelt cry of an unaccompanied voice, the eloquent arch of a dancer’s spine or the exquisite delicacy of a guitar solo can contain all the spirit – all the duende – of flamenco’s mysterious soul.” (The AGE, Australian National Press). Flamenco rhythms are vital; the “compás” is like a primal pulse, like the rhythm of the earth – and everyone must get to feel it!
