The Vancouver Classic Guitar Society is very pleased to present the Henderson-Kolk Guitar Duo in the opening concert of our 2009-2010 season.

Since forming in 2004, the Henderson-Kolk Duo has become established as one of Canada’s premier classical guitar duos. Drew Henderson, from Oakville, Ontario, and Michael Kolk, from Vancouver, met at the University of Toronto where they studied with Jeffrey McFadden. They quickly cultivated a musical chemistry that has resulted in a dynamic and exciting performance style. As soloists they have won a total of nine international competition prizes. As a duo they have performed across Canada and in the United States and they made their international debut at the Mediterranean Guitar Festival in Cervo, Italy in 2006.

Much of the Duo’s attention has been directed towards arranging new pieces for two guitars. Their first CD, Original Guitar Transcriptions, features music of Chopin, Mozart, Rodrigo, Scarlatti and Vivaldi and is played regularly on CBC Radio 2 and on National Public Radio. Their just completed second CD features original transcriptions of music by Bach and Ravel as well as works composed for guitar by Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Lhoyer. The Duo’s Vancouver program includes selections from both recordings and a new transcription of a work you might be surprised to hear from two guitars – Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor!
